UTalk doesn’t beat around the bush when they talk about the scope of their product. Who’s it for?įrom the uTalk website, “for anyone who wants to learn key words and phrases in another language.” That’s a pretty accurate summary. The layout of the app is very easy to understand, and within half an hour of using it, I had encountered most or all of the features it offers. As it stands now, the price is very reasonable for what’s on offer. This transition also saw the addition of material and the lowering of the price. In the past, uTalk sold CD-ROMs (remember those?) with language-learning content, but they’ve since transitioned to offering their product in an app as well as a browser version. These language items are accompanied by images and high-quality audio. It’s important to note that uTalk makes no attempt at providing grammar instruction, instead focusing its energy on teaching words and phrases. It’s designed for people that want to learn key words and phrases in another language. UTalk is an inexpensive language learning app with an impressive language library and lots of material. A quick search on the internet showed third-party reviews saying everything from “It’s just ok” to “Become fluent in another language with uTalk.” My experience was something much closer to the former. This was my first encounter with uTalk, so I didn’t know what to expect before trying it out.

There is a recording feature that you can try and listen to afterward, how you articulate words in a different language. Quick tip, change the character that speaks the words and hear the male or female pronunciation. The games are also recommended for parents and kids as well, it allows everyone to practice phrases, listen to new words and pronunciations, and repeat phrases.

It also includes free starter words that contain word games and phrase practice. UTalk provides multiple categories of words to learn, from simple words to more complicated classifications like asking directions, shopping phrases, driving, occupations, emergencies, business expressions, and many more. Make sure you create an account and log in to unlock the content. Interestingly enough, you can change the default language of the application so it is in your native vocabulary. There is a wide range of options to choose from, learn English, German, French, Italian or Spanish, Korean, Swahili or Tibetan. Right from the start, you're invited to choose the language you want to learn.
