Q: Why did you name the band Grand Funk Railroad?į: We were in Michigan and there was the Grand Trunk and Western Railroad that came through town. Q: How did the band create such a diverse sound including, funk, rhythm and blues and rock n’ roll?Ī: I think we were all influenced very early on by a lot of different kinds of music like blues and R&B, and pop and rock and Motown. That has gone all these years but we managed to make it work.Ī: We have some new songs over the past 15 years we focus on doing the big hits - a classic rock experience. It seems like one crisis goes to another crisis. It’s like a marriage you have to work at it. Q: What is the trick to having a band stay together for 45 years?Ī: There is no trick. It is going to be my first time performing in Key West. I have not been in quite a number of years and it is a destination my wife and I both love. Q: How do you feel about coming to Key West and putting on a show?Ī: I am looking forward to it. You don’t want me - so I am going to pass it around. Q: Is there a song you particularly like on one of your albums?Ī: One of the big ones is closest to home, “Foot Stomping Music.” And in the mid ‘70s I wrote a song called “Pass it Around” and it has always been a favorite song because of the story content. There is not a lot of singing drummers, but Don Henley (from the Eagles) does a great job. Does it take a toll on you?Ī: Both things take a lot of wind capacity, so I try to keep myself in top shape. Q: Playing drums and singing lead is pretty physical. Revered producer-artist Todd Rundgren, who’s about to resume his extensive An Evening With tour of North America, has been reminiscing about his days producing 1970s rock heavyweights Grand. One band went transformed into another and Grand Funk Railroad was born. Then I started playing with friends in the basement of my house. When I was playing at school with the band, it wasn’t as interesting. I saw Elvis Pressley on the Ed Sullivan show as a kid. The American Band Tour kicks off March 18 with an appearance at the Clewiston Sugar Festival in Clewiston, Florida, followed by an April 1 headlining date in Akron, Ohio. After the tour Mark Farner left the group to continue to focus on his solo career. Brewer took the time to talk about building the perfect set list and also discuss highlights of the Grand Funk Railroad set list, which is packed with one hit after another including of course the enduring We’re An American Band. In another sense, though, Grand Funk continues to live. The original members of Grand Funk Railroad reunited for one short tour in 1996. If anyone ever had any doubts about Grand Funk’s nationality, “We’re an American Band” put the questions to bed. The ebbs, the flows, the drama, the catchy verses, the hooky choruses… it’s all there, and it’s all magnificent.
It’s a testament to the band’s prowess that it didn’t here. Described by as Mark Farner’s magnum opus, few songs exemplify what Grand Funk were all about better than “I’m Your Captain (Closer To Home).” Any other song that lasted over ten minutes would stretch your concentration to breaking point. GRAND FUNK RAILROAD includes original founding members Don Brewer (vocals and drums, writer and singer of the multi-million selling hit 'We're An American Band') and bassist Mel Schacher.
